Date: 30 November 2024
30 November 2024, Miri - Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) celebrated a key moment in Sarawak's energy journey today with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant.
The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, officiated at the event.
Also at the event were Deputy Premier of Sarawak, YB Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, YB Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Bin Haji Narawi; and Minister for Transport Sarawak, YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin as well as other dignitaries and representatives from government agencies and industry players.
Team PETROS was led by its Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bugo, who was accompanied by Group CEO, Dato Janin Girie, senior management and staff.
With an investment of about RM2 billion, the 500MW Miri CCGT Power Plant will be utilising an advanced gas turbine with heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine to deliver cleaner and more efficient energy to the Sarawak grid network. The facility will support Sarawak's current and future energy demands while enhancing energy reliability for Northern Sarawak.
In his address, the Premier of Sarawak highlighted PETROS' vital role in driving the state’s oil and gas sector. “The Miri CCGT Power Plant is more than an infrastructure project. It is a symbol of our collective aspiration to make Sarawak a leader in energy innovation while creating tangible benefits for our people. This project is a crucial step towards realising the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) and achieving our vision of becoming a high-income state by 2030,” he stated.
Speaking at the event, YB Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Bin Haji Narawi said, “The Miri CCGT Power Plant represents Sarawak’s commitment to responsibly harnessing our abundant natural gas resources. By increasing domestic gas utilisation from 6% to 30% by 2030, this project underscores our dedication to creating opportunities for Sarawakians while leveraging our resources to meet both current and future energy demands sustainably.”
Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bugo, echoed this sentiment, describing the project as a testament to PETROS' commitment to Sarawak and its people. “Since our establishment in 2017, PETROS has acted on its commitment to harness Sarawak’s resources for sustainable progress. The Miri CCGT is not just a power plant, it represents a new era of economic growth, local talent development, and energy security for the state,” he remarked.
The powerplant, expected to be operational by end of 2027, will contribute significantly to Sarawak's energy infrastructure and economy, highlighting PETROS' role as Sarawak’s appointed Gas Aggregator, responsible for ensuring efficient gas distribution while driving industrial development.
The Premier of Sarawak also conducted a walkabout at the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Permyjaya, Miri, where PETROS is implementing its flagship community gas infrastructure project. The initiative aims to provide access to safe, affordable, and cleaner energy by installing gas infrastructure for lower-income households, underscoring PETROS' dedication to uplifting the communities it serves.
This transformative project, led by Sarawak Gas Distribution Sdn Bhd (SGD), a wholly owned subsidiary of PETROS, is being rolled out in five phases and will ultimately benefit over 3,000 households. With work advancing through Phases 2 and 3, and preparations underway for Phases 4 and 5, the project aligns with PETROS’ commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
As PETROS commemorates its 7th anniversary, the groundbreaking of the Miri CCGT Power Plant serves as a reflection of its commitment to Sarawak’s progress. The ceremony reinforced the shared vision of building a sustainable energy future while honouring the state’s history as an energy pioneer.
Established in 2017 and wholly Sarawak-owned, PETROS is on a mission to harness resources for sustainable progress of Sarawak and beyond, and plays a central role in advancing Sarawak’s energy sector, driving economic growth, and empowering communities.
