TRANSFORMING SARAWAK'S ENERGY LANDSCAPE: PETROS HOLDS FIRST SARAWAK GAS ROADMAP SUMMIT

25 November 2024, Kuching - Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) today held the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit, underscoring its commitment as the engine of growth for Sarawak’s development by transforming Sarawak’s gas industry and driving Sarawak’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The event marked the official launch of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, showcasing Sarawak’s readiness to lead in low-carbon solutions while highlighting vast investment opportunities. Through the SGR, PETROS is redefining the management and distribution of natural resources – retaining value within Sarawak while ensuring access to reliable and affordable energy for all communities, from urban hubs to remote villages.

The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, officiated at the event, highlighting Sarawak’s strategic advantages in harnessing its natural resources to build a sustainable future for Sarawak and beyond.

“Sarawak’s leadership in natural gas production and reserves, Carbon Capture and Storage potential, and hydropower generation solidifies our role as a key contributor to global decarbonisation efforts. By advancing energy transition and attracting sustainable investments, we are enhancing economic growth while safeguarding environmental sustainability for generations to come,” he affirmed.

The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak also participated in a Fireside Chat, where he shared Sarawak’s strategic vision to establish itself as a leader in low-carbon energy, sustainable development and regional connectivity.

Over 500 delegates attended the event, including industry leaders, government agencies, community leaders, and representatives from academia to network, share ideas and confront current challenges facing the energy transition.

PETROS Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bin Bugo, reflected on the company’s transformative journey and impact, emphasising PETROS’ role in reshaping Sarawak’s energy landscape through the SGR, stating “This marks our commitment to unlocking the full potential of Sarawak’s natural gas resources to drive sustainable growth, foster innovation and position Sarawak as a regional leader in energy and industrial development.”

The Summit featured insightful discussions on sustainable urban transformation, advancements in natural gas infrastructure, and PETROS’ efforts to develop local talent and promote greater local participation in the oil and gas sector. A key highlight was the exchange of five Joint Study/Collaboration Agreements between PETROS and leading international industry players such as Sumitomo Corporation Asia & Oceania, MITSUBISHI, Woodside Energy, Anton Oilfield Services Group, PETRA Energy and Boston Consulting Group.

The Summit reinforced PETROS’ Purpose: “Harnessing Resources for Sustainable Progress of Sarawak and Beyond.” As Sarawak continues its journey to become a regional energy leader, PETROS remains committed to responsible resource management and delivering tangible benefits that improve the quality of life for the people of Sarawak.
